It's that time again....As North Metro prepares to enter the competitive arena once again, it’s hard to believe that four years have passed since we represented Region 16 at International Competition! For a chorus that is so highly motivated to excel it was a new experience for us to slow down and take time to do some group soul-searching. After much discussion, the decision was unanimous – we wanted to develop greater technical skills. We honestly felt there were levels of excellence that were attainable, so we began to work on various aspects of our performance skills because – as Erin is apt to say - the joy is in the journey. (Actually, on the risers, whenever my back, hips, knees or feet ache – I repeat that like a mantra – ‘The joy is in the journey, the joy is in the journey………!) During the year we sat out, chorus members experienced life’s realities. We welcomed babies, celebrated weddings and anniversaries, endured illnesses and broken bones, mourned the passing of family members, and said a final farewell to some dearly loved chorus sisters. Although we found the past year or so to be both unique and interesting, I must be honest and say that there is nothing like actually challenging oneself on the International Stage. The level of energy, excitement, and sheer adrenaline radiating from the competing choruses is like no other in the world, and I have to admit that our chorus members are extremely eager to sing in Las Vegas – especially as we get to support, and spend time with, our Regional sisters, Canadian Showtime. In addition, we will be having dinner next door to Gem City after competition in Vegas and they’ve asked if we can ‘roll back the wall’ after dinner and have one enormous hospitality suite for the two choruses and anyone else who might like to visit. We were delighted to agree! There is nothing more fun than visiting and singing with other choruses! Earlier this year we had the wonderful opportunity to be coached by Jim Henry of the Gashouse Gang. Jim has worked with us before and his spiritual approach to music, as well as his commitment to sharing this gift with an audience, resonated deeply with us. We are very much looking forward to spending more time with him as he will be coaching us at our upcoming weekend retreat in Nottawasaga, Ontario. Recently, we also had our dear friend Joe Connolly work with us for two nights, and he will be returning to coach us again in September. We So – as you can tell – we are working hard on our contest package – and enduring – sorry, I meant to say enjoying - the journey! Until next time……stay safe and sing well! Doreen Pooley
